Introduction: large-scale fortification, an important nutrition-specific intervention

The papers presented in this Supplement cover a wide range of topics pertinent to the implementation of large-scale food fortification programs and contribute to strengthening ongoing programs, as well as providing important lessons for new countries.

Within the last decade, many large-scale food fortification initiatives (iodized salt, sugar, flour, and oil fortification) have been implemented in a number of countries around the world, but many more people could still benefit from fortification programs. This Supplement to the Food and Nutrition Bulletin is devoted to focusing attention on the lessons learned from different country experiences on large-scale food fortification. It covers country experiences of eight national fortification programs (Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Morocco, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Ghana, and Indonesia) and one regional initiative (West Africa).
