Tackling nutrition inequalities at the heart of the food system

This presentation was given by Lawrence Haddad, GAIN's Executive Director, at the EAT Forum held in Stockholm in 2017. It focused on three inequalities at the heart of the food system that generate poor nutrition outcomes:

  1. approaches used to influence the demand for food;
  2. healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables that are unaffordable for large parts of the world;
  3. asymmetry of information about business and nutrition.

In response to these inequalities, GAIN is working with a range of public and private stakeholders to increase the demand for healthy food, increase the capacity of small and medium and large enterprises (SMEs) to meet that demand and make nutritious food available at a lower price, and create an environment that enables businesses to do good for nutrition.

The EAT Stockholm Food Forum 2017 gathered 500 of the brightest minds from science, politics, business, and civil society to discuss the progress on transforming the food system to solve the interconnected challenges of climate, sustainable development and health.
