IWD Theme is For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment

On 8 March 2025, join GAIN in celebrating International Women’s Day under the powerful theme:

🎯 "For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment."
This year, we’re calling for bold actions that unlock equal rights, power, and opportunities for every woman and girl—no matter where they are. It’s a reminder that gender equality isn’t just a goal—it’s a right.

At the heart of this vision is the next generation—young women and adolescent girls—rising as leaders, changemakers, and catalysts for lasting change. Together, we can build a future where no one is left behind.

GAIN’s Campaign Focus

#RightsEqualityEmpowerment #ForAllWomenandGirls #NourishingEquality

The theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 is For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment

As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, GAIN reaffirms its commitment to improving the consumption of healthier diets for all people, especially the most vulnerable, by enhancing the availability, affordability, desirability, and sustainability of nutritious and safe foods. This year’s theme, aligned with the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, underscores the urgent need to address systemic barriers to gender equality and women’s empowerment, particularly in the context of food systems and nutrition.

Women and girls are disproportionately affected by malnutrition, food insecurity, and the impacts of unsustainable food systems. Yet, they are also powerful agents of change in transforming food systems and improving nutrition outcomes for their families and communities. By empowering women and girls, we can create a ripple effect that leads to healthier diets, stronger communities, and more sustainable food systems.

Campaign Objectives:

  • Advance Women’s and Girls’ Rights in Nutrition: Advocate for policies and programs that ensure women and girls have equitable access to nutritious and safe foods, free from discrimination and exploitation.
  • Promote Gender Equality in Food Systems: Address systemic barriers that limit women’s participation in food production, distribution, and decision-making, and amplify the voices of marginalized women and girls.
  • Foster Empowerment Through Nutrition: Empower women and girls with the knowledge, resources, and opportunities to lead in creating healthier, more sustainable food systems.

Accelerating Action for Women & Girls

Women are integral to the food system, yet their contributions often go unnoticed. In many households, women eat last and least, leading to long-term health challenges. It’s crucial to recognize the additional obstacles women face and take action to empower change. Support must go beyond words and translate into real-world solutions. Michael Ojo, Country Director for Nigeria, shares his insights on the path to empowering women in food system

What Challenges Do Women In Food Systems Face?

Women are the backbone of global food systems, yet their contributions are often undervalued. From farming and food production to processing, distribution, and nutrition, women play a crucial role—especially in developing regions where they form the majority of the agricultural workforce. However, they continue to face barriers such as limited access to land, credit, and agricultural technologies, reinforcing gender disparities in food security and economic opportunity. Caroline Atim, Gender Advisor at GAIN in Africa sheds more light.

Breaking Barriers For #WomenInFoodSystems | International Women's Day 2025

Through initiatives like food fortification, gender-responsive policies, and financial empowerment, GAIN is working to ensure that women have the tools, resources, and opportunities to thrive in food systems. Real change begins with action—let’s break the barriers holding women back.
