Accelerating Action for Food Safety Transformation in Africa, Asia, and Latin America

This webinar is structured as a discussion with leaders following the UN Food Systems Summit. It places five priority areas in front of regional thought leaders to move us toward Actions for Food Safety Transformation. Regional leaders will share their insights on these priorities and the realities on the ground for making them happen considering, politics, financing, scalability, inclusivity and gaps in capacity and infrastructure.

Moderated by Steve Wearne, panelists will share challenges, lessons learned, successes, and vision for the future of food safety. Additionally, attendees will gain knowledge on current trends in governance that can achieve important food safety and nutrition objectives.

Bonnie is the Director for Food Safety and is based in Washington DC, USA. Bonnie has more than twenty years’ experience working in agricultural research and development within the institutes that make up the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) under the World Bank.

Director, Global Affairs, UK Food Standards Agency; Vice-Chairperson, Codex Alimentarius Commission

Steve Wearne is Director of Global Affairs at the UK Food Standards Agency and Vice-Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. He has had a number of Director roles in the Food Standards Agency. He was Director of the FSA in Wales from 2007 until 2013 and then Director of Policy & Science. Steve became Director, Global Affairs in September 2019, a role that incorporates his current position of Vice-Chair of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Opens in a new window), the global food safety and quality standards setting body.

Dr. Amare Ayalew is Program Manager of the Partnership for Aflatoxin Control in Africa (PACA) at the African Union Commission since 2013. He has led PACA’s strategic planning, launch and implementation of country and regional programs, continental and global advocacy in aflatoxin control and broader food safety, as well as generation of locally relevant evidence through the launch of the Africa Aflatoxin Information Management System (AfricaAIMS) and the Africa Food Safety Index (AFSI).

Agricultural Health and Food Safety Acting Manager, Inter American Institute of Cooperation on Agriculture.

Ana Marisa Cordero has international experience on assessment and modernization of national food safety control systems, veterinary and phytosanitary services. She has been responsible for the development and implementation of the “Performance, Vision and Strategy Tool” used to characterize the performance of the agricultural health and food safety services in different countries.

Pham Duc Phuc
Coordinator, Vietnam One Health University Network

Dr. Phuc is the Deputy Director, Center for Public Health and Ecosystem Research at the Hanoi University of Public Health (HUPH) and Director, Institute of Environmental Health and Sustainable Development. Dr. Phuc holds a Medical Degree from Hanoi Medical University (1995) and a Master’s degree in International Health from the University of Copenhagen (2003). He also attained a PhD degree (December 2011) from the University of Basel, Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. He has been involved in many research projects on health risks related to water and sanitation, especially at the interface between environment and health, using an interdisciplinary approach (One Health, Ecohealth).
