Mumbi Macharia is a 24 year old Kenyan writer, spoken word poet, and self-published author. Having begun her journey as a poet in 2016, she is regarded as a luminary in the spoken word scene in East Africa, having performed on major poetry stages in Nairobi, Kampala, and Dar es Salaam. In 2020, Mumbi was the winner of the Sondeka Award for Kenyan Spoken Word Poet of the Year. In the same year, Mumbi self-published her debut poetry book titled "When I Learned How to Walk & Other Poems", and is currently working on more literary projects. Mumbi's artistic goal is to create work that makes audiences feel something. Her mantra is "you don't start writing poetry until you start telling the truth".
