WHA77 Side Event: Initiative on Climate Action and Nutrition (I-CAN) Roundtable

Date: 30 May 2024
Time: 17:30 -19:00 CEST
Venue: Villa le Bocage, Palais des Nations, Geneva

The Government of Egypt and the Initiative on Climate Action and Nutrition (including FAO, WHO, SUN, UN-Nutrition and GAIN) will co-host an invitation-only roundtable on nutrition and climate. The goal is to place nutrition at the heart of the climate-health nexus, which is the focus of a new Resolution at WHA77, and to encourage Member States to share best practices on policies, strategies, and programmes that are already encouraging integrated action.

WHA77 Statement: WHO Global Strategy for Food Safety

GAIN will be voicing our support for the WHO Global Strategy for Food Safety and reducing the risks in traditional markets. We have long recognised the importance of integrating food safety into our work. Outbreaks linked to unsafe food can adversely impact supply chain actors and the supply of nutritious foods. In order to achieve healthier diets for all, we must consider both food safety across the entire supply chain. Check our official statement!

WHA77 Statement: Climate and Health

The two-way relationship between food systems and climate creates opportunities for action contributing to climate mitigation, adaptation, resilience, and human health co-benefits, alongside a range of positive socioeconomic outcomes, making food systems transformation for nutrition and climate a key strategy to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. The WHA Resolution on Climate and Health therefore has come at a perfect moment to re-emphasise these critical connections, and GAIN emphatically supports the call for coherent and holistic approaches to these interlinked challenges.
