United Nations Biodiversity Conference - COP16

21 October - 1 November 2024

COP 16 will be the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP 15 in December 2022 in Montreal, Canada.

At COP 16, governments will be tasked with reviewing the state of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Parties to the Convention are expected to show the alignment of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Framework. COP 16 will further develop the monitoring framework and advance resource mobilisation for the Global Biodiversity Framework. Among other tasks, COP 16 is also due to finalise and operationalise the multilateral mechanism on the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of digital sequence information on genetic resources.

GAIN at COP16

At COP16, GAIN will focus on opportunities to integrate nutrition into biodiversity strategies (NBSAPs) through food systems approaches. This will be supported by an upcoming report under the Initiative on Climate Action and Nutrition (I-CAN) and led by GAIN, which assesses the extent to which current NBSAPs consider nutrition issues. It also provides analysis and recommendations for countries updating their NBSAPs for the next round of reviews.

By participating in the Conference, attending negotiations, supporting side events, and meeting with partners, GAIN will seek to push for progress on the Global Biodiversity Framework and associated national strategies, increased finance for developing countries, and stronger connections between climate, nature, and food systems transformation.

We will be represented throughout, so please get in touch with Oliver Camp, Environment and Food Systems Advocacy Advisor, if you have any questions or connect on the ground.
