Taking stock of the implementation of policies and legal frameworks to transform food systems in Kenya: Progress, Challenges, and opportunities

The CASCADE project hosted a webinar on 30 October 2024 to evaluate the progress, challenges, and opportunities in implementing policies and legal frameworks to improve food systems in Kenya. The objectives included analysing Kenya's food and nutrition landscape, discussing nutrition-related policy implementation, highlighting women’s role in agri-food systems, and exploring ways to improve nutrition governance, financing, and policy best practices.

The speakers were:

The webinar was moderated by Boniface Musembi who is the Communications Manager at GAIN Kenya.

The discussion highlighted best practices and recommendations to enhance Kenya’s food systems, with a particular focus on effective policy implementation, financing, and inclusivity in nutrition governance. Panellists emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between state and non-state actors to drive sustainable food systems and improve nutrition outcomes across the country.

Dorothy is a gender specialist with 9 years of experience passionately championing for the rights of women and girls while meaningfully engaging men for gender justice. She is also a public health specialist and researcher with 16 years of experience advocating for social behaviour change and good governance in the health and nutrition sectors.

Dennis Olila
Senior Economist, National Treasury

Dennis Olila, Senior Economist at Kenya’s National Treasury, has over a decade of experience in financial and sectoral affairs, covering areas like trade, regional integration, and disaster risk financing. He serves as the Nutrition focal officer, collaborating with the Ministries of Health and Agriculture as well as development partners to advance nutrition policies. In 2019, he contributed significantly to Kenya's chapter of the Cost of Hunger in Africa study. Additionally, Olila is a UNICEF-trained trainer on Nutrition Financial Tracking, supporting this program across Kenya’s counties, and he is a member of the Technical Committee for the National Information Platform for Food and Nutrition. He holds a Master’s degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics from the University of Nairobi and the University of Pretoria.
